Growing Carpet 2004 Future Design Days, Stockholm

Growing Carpet is a growing installation created by Sissi Westerberg and invited artists/designers. Step by step different pieces of carpet are put together, forming landscape-like wall to wall carpet.

Growing Carpet is an attempt to create a collaboration were the participants literally work on the same piece, switching places with each other and carrying on were someone else left off. This to explore what happens when different expressions meet and influence each other.

Pictures from Future Design Days in Stockholm 2004 where Sissi invited Frida Fjellman (SWE), Benjamin Slotteröy (NO), Dan Sunaga (JP) and Michiyo Michiyashita (JP) to make the carpet for Tokyo Style.

Translations with S U B

S U B is an art/craft/design collective consisting of Sissi Westerberg, Ulf Samuelsson and Benjamin Slotteröy. The group usually conducts projects were other people are invited to participate. This as a way to escape ingrained patterns, open up for discussion and to hand over some of the control in order to get a more unpredictable result.

Translations is performed as a workshop in different settings and places, with different invited participants. The aim is to investigate our way of interpreting, describing and communicating around everyday-objects and forms.

The people invited to participate in the workshops are asked to pick and describe a functional object for five minutes, without revealing what it is. Sitting back to back with the person, one in the group will make an interpretation from the description using a kilo of clay.

The project aims to investigate what happens when we peal off all references to an objects and try to interpret only the physical shape, as if you saw it for the first time. Some characteristics are lost and some get exaggerated. The process can also be used as an alternative design method, were misunderstandings create new shapes that are sometimes even more interesting than the original.
